Hi,
I was having similar issues on my system. A dell GX520 running Ubuntu server 8.04. After many reinstalles of the OS I was finally able to get it running again. I ended up upgrading the OS to the new testing release of ubuntu server 8.10. On Ubuntu desktop issue a update-manager -d and follow the instructions for accepting the distribution upgrade. For the server make sure the update-manager-core package is installed and issue a do-release-upgrade -d and follow the instructions for upgrading.

Ubuntu 8.10 uses the newer kernel 2.6.26 which includes newer wireless drivers.

Hope this helps.
