System-wide lockups and unkillable processes indicate buggy drivers. Try different drivers - if you're using kernel drivers, try the serialmonkey ones. If you're using serialmonkey, try kernel (compat-wireless is probably a good place to start looking, google will help you find a package or instructions for your distro.)

Kismet tends to exercise drivers in ways normal usage doesn't, but when something locks up unkillable like that it's a driver bug going into uninterruptable IO wait state or similar.
