OK, seems to be solved:

The package supplied by openSUSE 10.3 beta1 has problems:

FATAL: Support for capture source type 'ipw3945' was not built. Check the output from 'configure' for more information about why it might not have been compiled in.

After downloading the sources from here, I got the same error, which led me to think, that it is caused by the new driver.

Some digging turns out, that kismet needs to be built completely as root, right from ./configure to make install.

Then it runs with the source setting from ipw3945:

source=ipw3945,wlan0,ipw3945-source

Sorry for causing any confusion.
