the plot thickens ... i created a symbolic link:

sudo ln -s /usr/local/include/usb.h /usr/include/usb.h

./configure<cr> then states:

checking for usb.h... yes
checking for usb_init in -lusb... no
configure: error: *** LibUSB required. Linking -lusb failed.

i'm guessing that it's looking for something in the usb.h libary named usb_init:

$ grep -i usb_init /usr/include/usb.h<cr> shows:

void usb_init(void);
