Subject:Kismet compile fails at make install

I compiled Kismet-2005-08-R1 from source using g++ v.3.3.5, after installing libncurses5-dev. The ./configure and make steps went without a hitch but make install failed with the following messages:

# make install
make -e commoninstall
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/robert/kismet-2005-08-R1'
mkdir -p /usr/local/etc
mkdir -p /usr/local/bin
install -o "root" -g "root" -m 755 scripts/kismet /usr/local/bin/kismet
install -o "root" -g "root" -s -m 755 kismet_client /usr/local/bin/kismet_client
# install -o "root" -g "root" -s -m 755 /usr/local/bin/
mkdir -p /usr/local/man/man1
mkdir: cannot create directory `/usr/local/man': File exists
make[1]: *** [commoninstall] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/robert/kismet-2005-08-R1'
make: *** [install] Error 2

In /usr/local there is no directory "man" but rather a symbolic link "man" which points to /share/man/. What do I need to do to fix this stalled make install?
