kismet.conf has "source=hostap,wlan0,prism2source"

locutus etc # kismet
Server options: none
Client options: none

FATAL: SetIFFlags: Unknown interface wlan0: Connection timed out

running kernel 2.6.14-gentoo-r2 (udev) with the kernel module for hostap

my udev rule looks like:
KERNEL="eth*", SYSFS{address}="00:02:6f:MY_MAC_HERE", NAME="wlan0"

locutus etc # iwconfig
wlan0 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"" Nickname:""
Mode:Managed Bit Rate:11 Mb/s
RTS thr:off
Encryption key:off
Link Quality:24 Signal level:144 Noise level:107
Rx invalid nwid:0 invalid crypt:0 invalid misc:0

What am I doing wrong? This card (Senao NL-2511CD+EXT2) and notebook (Dell i8200) used to work fine with older kernels (devfs) and the linux-wlan-ng drivers.
