I had this - one of the other forum areas has this advice [+ a bit of mine]

su
# Bugger about with settings
ifconfig eth1 down
iwconfig eth1 mode monitor
ifconfig eth1 up
kismet
# Restart network after Kismet
service -f network

This works for me, Mandriva 2006 + Centrino ipw2100

In theory it shouldn't, apparently. Still does though.

You can't use the network for, well, networking, so I think the ifup/down may not be essential?
