And you ran configure first? And you're using the source tarball from the site? Something is very odd with your system since I haven't seen any problems and that's a pretty fundamental breakage.
You're not doing something weird like trying to put the source on a case-insensitive filesystem or something? I've seen make get stupid about that (ie, don't try to compile on a vfat or ntfs filesystem under linux)
