Awesome, I'll take a look ASAP.
I'm currently rewriting gpsmap into a new app called (creatively) 'kismap' to differentiate it.
It's written in python, and currently works with google maps - i'd like to make it work with open map tile services too. It's modeled off maemo mapper, so that should definitely be possible.
I just finished some config file support so I'll check it into SVN soon if you'd like to take a look.
